Keith Duncan, President of the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica (PSOJ) and co-chair of Project STAR, has said that investing in people through a programme of inclusiveness, collaboration, and a shared vision is one solution to Jamaica's economic and social problems. Duncan was among eight distinguished speakers addressing 135 countries worldwide at the Global Leadership Summit on Thursday, November 17. Project STAR is a scalable initiative created by the PSOJ in partnership with the Jamaica Constabulary Force, which aims to solve problems at a community level while unearthing the potential of people. One significant pillar of Project STAR is economic transformation, where private sector businesses will provide jobs for members of targeted communities with high levels of unemployment.

Young entrepreneurs thrive through Project STAR's support

Ten at-risk youth from Treadlight district in May Pen, Clarendon are on their way to becoming entrepreneurs having graduated from Project STAR’s Nano-Programme. At a recent graduation ceremony held at Treadlight Primary School, the graduates were awarded with equipment to jump-start their businesses.

Project STAR reports reduction in crime in targeted communities

Project STAR has reported significant success in reducing crime in the three communities it has been working with the longest — Savanna-la-Mar in Westmoreland, and Parade Gardens and Rose Gardens in East Downtown Kingston. Dr Parris Lyew-Ayee, data scientist for Project STAR, shared the update during a recent donor breakfast at the S Hotel in Kingston, where the project team outlined its ongoing initiatives. “One of the most remarkable outcomes has been observed in Savanna-la-Mar communities [Harmony Town, Seaton Crescent and New Market Oval] where, for nearly a year, there have been zero recorded major crimes. This accomplishment stands as a testament to the project’s long-term impact and strategic execution,” said Dr Lyew-Ayee, according to a release from Project STAR.
