Duncan says investment in education critical to breaking the back of crime
The President of the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica, Keith Duncan, has said that investing in early childhood and primary education is critical to improving outcomes for children and breaking the back of crime. He noted that Jamaica spends more money on remedial and tertiary education than on early childhood education when compared to other Caribbean countries, which he believes contributes to a weak foundation and a lack of interest in education. Duncan added that the failure to invest in people is leading to a surge in crime, and while States of Emergency are necessary to save lives in the short term, investing in people is also required in the long term. He spoke about the work of Project STAR, which aims to invest in people and create job opportunities.
